LORD MOUNTBATTEN: THE LAST VICEROY

Acorn Media has released the compelling story of Lord Mountbatten's role as the Last Viceroy of India. Lord Mountbatten: The Last Viceroy features a stellar cast including Ian Richardson, Nicol Williamson and Sam Dastor.

Lord Mountbatten was the great grandson of Queen Victoria. Following a distinguished career in the Navy in which he served in both the First and Second World War the Prime Minister, Clement Attlee, appointed him as Viceroy of India. Mountbatten was given the seemingly impossible task of bringing about independence.

Against a backdrop of violence and insurrection Lord Mountbatten was faced with a group of highly influential and charismatic men, Pandit Nehru, Mohammed Ali Jinnah and Mahatma Gandhi. It was vital to all concerned that he formulated a plan for Partition that was agreeable to all parties.

Originally broadcast on ITV, 27-29.4.86 this series follows the events which lead to the jubilant celebrations at midnight on 15 August 1947. The moment marked the dawn of Independence for India and the end of the British Raj.
